Internet

By Grok and Published by AXJ.NEWS

The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that uses the standardized Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP) to allow billions of devices worldwide to communicate and share information. It is a “network of networks” that relies on physical cables, wireless signals, routers, and servers to function.

Key Concepts

  • Network of Networks: The Internet connects private, public, academic, and government networks globally, forming a vast infrastructure.
  • TCP/IP: Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol is the fundamental set of rules (protocols) that all connected devices agree upon to ensure data is transmitted reliably and efficiently, regardless of the underlying hardware or software.
  • Packet Switching: When data is sent over the internet, it is broken down into small units called “packets.” Each packet is addressed and travels independently across the network, often via different routes, and is reassembled into the original data at its destination.
  • Clients and Servers: The system operates on a client-server model. A client (your computer, phone, etc.) requests information from a server (a specialized computer that stores and serves content like web pages, videos, or email).
  • World Wide Web (WWW): The Web is a major service that runs on the Internet, consisting of interlinked hypertext documents and applications accessed via web browsers. It is often confused with the Internet itself, but the Internet is the underlying infrastructure that the Web uses.

How It Works

When you access a website ( www.axj.news ), your device:

  1. Sends a Request: Your computer sends a request for data (e.g., a web page) through your local network, router, and modem to your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
  2. Routes the Request: The ISP routes this request through a series of other networks and routers to the server that stores the website’s data.
  3. Server Responds: The server retrieves the information and sends it back to your device in small data packets.
  4. Reassembly: Your device receives the packets and uses a web browser to interpret and display the information as a coherent webpage.

This entire process happens in milliseconds.

Primary Uses

The Internet has transformed nearly all aspects of modern life. Common uses include:

  • Communication: Email, instant messaging, social media, and video conferencing.
  • Information Retrieval: Accessing a vast range of information via search engines and websites for education and research.
  • Entertainment: Streaming media (music, movies, videos), online gaming, and social networking.
  • E-commerce: Online shopping and financial services.
  • Cloud Computing: Storing and processing data on remote servers rather than local machines.
